Asia's MICE industry is quickly catching on to the idea of planning more sustainable events, with green meeting options becoming more readily available at hotels all across the region. In Singa-pore, the industry is seeing steady growth for green meeting offerings and as such venue operators are developing a range of green solutions to event organisers.
One place that has jumped on the eco bandwagon is the ISO-certified Marina Bay Sands, which offers a range of green meeting options and customisable solutions at no additional cost to organ-isers. Planners can opt to use the services of a designated green meeting concierge or choose from a wide range of options, including the Harvest Menus option which offers sustainably sourced food for events. Also on offer at the integrated resort is a post-event carbon impact statement that details just how sustainable an event is.
The 5th Responsible Business Forum, organised by Global Initiatives, recently achieved its ambi-tious "Zero Waste, Zero Emissions" goal with the help of Marina Bay Sands, its sustainable venue sponsor. The event utilised a number of eco-friendly catering options which included replacing paper napkins with cloth ones and cutting down on food waste by implementing a vegetarian menu with all leftovers being 100% 'digestible' by onsite mechanical digesters which turns leftover food into waste water.
"As the organiser of RBF, and this first ever zero-waste zero emission conference with Marina Bay Sands, we wanted to 'walk the talk' and get delegates thinking about how much every plastic cup, plane ride, and conference badge actually impacts the earth," said Tony Gourlay, Chief Ex-ecutive, Global Initiatives. "Our ambitious waste reduction targets would have been impossible to even consider without the industry leading sustainability commitments of our venue partner Mari-na Bay Sands. They help us to lift the bar higher on this every year."
