What 17,000 delegates reveal about the future of international conventions

Nearly 17,000 delegates from more than 140 countries and regions gathered in Hong Kong's AsiaWorld-Expo this July for the 108th Lions International Convention (LionsCon 2026). For six days, members of Lions Clubs International (LCI), one of the world's largest service organisations, came together to exchange ideas, celebrate achievements and advance a shared mission of humanitarian service.

But beyond the numbers, the convention reflected a broader shift in the meetings industry. Today’s attendees expect more than a packed programme. They want meaningful experiences, authentic engagement with the destination and opportunities to create positive impact beyond the conference hall.

LionsCon 2026 became a compelling case study in how those ambitions can be brought to life at scale.

Scale meets significance

Bringing together thousands of delegates from around the world is never simply a logistical exercise.

The convention required space for plenary sessions for up to 11,000 attendees, exhibitions, breakout meetings, cultural celebrations and community initiatives, while accommodating delegates arriving from across Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and Oceania. 

The event marked Hong Kong's third time hosting the Lions International Convention, a distinction shared by only a handful of cities among the organisation's 200-plus member countries and territories.

“For [LCI’s] District 303, which serves Hong Kong and Macao, it was a profound source of pride to showcase our dynamic city – where Eastern and Western cultures converge – and provide our international family with a diverse platform to explore the future of humanitarian service,” said Gary Luk, chairman of the organising committee for LionsCon 2026.

The turnout was LCI's largest convention since the pandemic and welcomed the biggest contingent of Chinese delegates in the organisation's history.

AsiaWorld-Expo’s location also made participation easier for regional attendees. More than 3,000 members from 14 regions across Mainland China and around 200 delegates from Macao travelled to the venue with ease, many via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Connecting delegates to a destination

Increasingly, international conventions are expected to reflect the character of their host destination. 

For LionsCon 2026, Hong Kong itself became part of the experience.

One of the convention's standout moments saw nearly 4,000 delegates from six continents come together for a mass Tai Chi session to set a new world record. Many participants were experiencing the centuries-old practice for the first time, creating a memorable introduction to an important element of Chinese culture.

Meanwhile, Dragon's Night brought together more than 2,000 Chinese Lions members from around the world to celebrate their shared heritage through performances, traditions and cultural exchange.

Hosting an event of this scale required nearly 200 banquet tables, demonstrating the scale and flexibility to stage such a celebration. The venue's soaring ceilings also enabled the use of indoor drones safely to capture aerial footage of both the Tai Chi record attempt and Dragon Night.

“Coordinating thousands of people for a synchronised physical activity was a colossal logistical and spatial challenge,” said Luk. “AsiaWorld-Expo’s team provided the adaptable space, crowd-control expertise and creative technical support needed to pull off this breathtaking historic feat without a hitch.”

The rise of the convention ecosystem

As international events become more sophisticated, organisers increasingly depend on partners that can support more than venue operations alone.

From the bidding process through to event delivery, AsiaWorld-Expo worked alongside the organising committee to coordinate stakeholders across multiple sectors, including collaborating with Airport Authority Hong Kong to curate hospitality services for delegates.

The venue also transformed two exhibition halls into dedicated shuttle bus holding areas, creating an efficient, weather-protected system for moving delegates between hotels throughout Hong Kong and the convention venue.

“What carried weight was AsiaWorld-Expo's proven ability to act as an ecosystem ‘super-connector’, said Luk. “We needed a partner embedded in the city’s broader tourism and hospitality networks, and AsiaWorld-Expo offered exactly that, bridging our organising committee with local businesses, transport authorities and unique cultural experiences.”

Creating positive impact beyond the convention hall

Community service and sustainability remain at the heart of LCI’s mission, which focuses on supporting communities in need while promoting peace and international understanding.

Beyond attending meetings and celebrations, delegates participated in a range of community initiatives throughout the convention. Members conducted vision screenings for approximately 100 primary school students, distributed school bags and plush toys upcycled from polo-shirts used at previous Lions conventions, and assembled handmade gifts and lunchboxes for elderly residents.

These activities brought the organisation's purpose to life while demonstrating how large-scale conventions can generate benefits beyond tourism spending and business outcomes.

A blueprint for the next generation of events

The success of LionsCon 2026 illustrates how expectations around international conventions are evolving.
