Venues and destinations across APAC and the Middle East commit further to eco-friendly initiatives.

Resorts World Sentosa joins GSTC
Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) as part of its vision to become a global leader in sustainable tourism. GSTC encourages destinations pursuing sustainability practices in tourism to join as members. RWS was also recently recognised as the world’s first venue to achieve the Platinum Level certification under the latest Events Industry Council 2022 Sustainable Events Standards.

Centara gets GSTC certification nod
Thailand-based Centara Hotels & Resorts has received approval for certification from Vireo SRL, a GSTC-accredited certification body, for meeting GSTC global standards for sustainable travel and tourism, known as the GSTC Criteria. Criteria for hotels include demonstrating effective sustainable management and maximising benefits to culture heritage and the environment. Centara said the certification represents a major milestone in its ongoing commitment to sustainability and that being certified means that its products and services comply with the highest social and environmental standards.

ADNEC pledges to Net Zero
ADNEC Group, which manages a number of venues, including Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and Al Ain Convention Centre, announced last month that it is now a major contributor to the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative. The industry initiative has pledged to produce net zero carbon footprint events by 2050.

Sarawak unveils responsible tourism agenda
Sarawak is showcasing how the destination is incorporating elements of waste management, energy conservation and environmental education into its tourism tours to ensure visitors contribute to the conservation of the destination’s attractions for generations to come. It is promoting how tourism players are adapting eco-friendly practices in their tourism products, such as encouraging bicycle-rides in rural areas or enjoying bird-watching in the destination’s rainforests. Tourism players are also actively promoting homestays, encouraging consumption of local food, and highlighting local handicrafts and arts.
