Inside Macao's global tech push
Beyond the expo floor, Macao’s longer-term ambitions are taking shape. Construction of Macao Science and Technology Research and Development Industrial Park is now underway. It focuses on four key industries: biomedicine, integrated circuits, digital technology, and aerospace technology. The park is committed to building an integrated innovation ecosystem encompassing “research, incubation and commercialization” services.

When Macao co-hosted the first Global Artificial Intelligence Machines and Electronics Expo (AIE) from 4–6 December 2025, alongside neighbouring Zhuhai, it achieved something beyond a successful event. The city reinforced its status as a world-class events hub and established itself as a serious player in the global technology arena.

Held within the state-of-the-art Cotai Expo at The Venetian Macao, the sheer scale of the AIE made an immediate impression. Over 60,000 attendees flocked to the three-day affair, which covered 40,000sqm of exhibitions showcasing breakthroughs in technology, smart equipment, consumer electronics and new energy solutions. Leading Chinese brands such as Honor, Vivo, OPPO and Lenovo showcased their cutting-edge innovations, while nearly 1,000 tech pioneers from around the world were also present.

Platforms for collaboration

With technology and innovation high on Macao’s economic agenda, AIE proved a natural fit where the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao SAR's (IPIM) “Exhibition + Inspection + Matching” strategy was put to maximum impact.

The first AIE hosted in Macao drew more than 60,000 attendees, including leading technology players such as Dolby.

The approach worked on two fronts. It helped local companies with global ambitions connect with international tech firms from markets including the Middle East, Russia and Thailand, while also introducing foreign exhibitors to Macao’s dynamic business environment and investment opportunities. Representatives from IPIM visited key exhibitors from Mainland China, Brazil and Portugal, extending conversations beyond the show floor and accelerating post-event project implementation.

By the close of AIE, some companies had expressed interest in establishing operations in Macao. Several firms from Portuguese-speaking countries had completed set-up procedures, citing the convenience offered by the “Exhibition + Inspection + Matching” model and the city’s multiple strategic advantages – particularly the ease of expansion and access to Mainland China.

Built for connection

From 18 to 21 January, Macao successfully hosted another technology event: the 25th International Conference on Electronics, Information, and Communication (ICEIC 2026). Organised by Korea’s Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers, ICEIC picked Macao as the host destination after rotating through Asian cities such as Singapore and Osaka.

According to Sojin Lee, Secretariat for ICEIC 2026, Macao’s compact layout and purpose-built infrastructure played a crucial role in their choice of the city. “We chose Macao because it offers excellent conference facilities, high-quality hotels, and a very convenient environment for international participants,” she explains.

The conference brought together more than 620 researchers, engineers, and industry professionals from around the world for four days of technical sessions, plenary talks and cross-border collaborations.

Event venue MGM COTAI exemplifies this advantage. The iconic integrated resort places world-class conference venues alongside premium accommodation under one roof, minimising travel time and maximising opportunities for meaningful interaction.

Beyond the halls

Beyond logistics, Macao delivers something every successful MICE event needs: a strong sense of place. Delegates at ICEIC 2026 made time to explore the city, drawn by its unique blend of modern infrastructure, UNESCO-listed heritage, and an extraordinary food scene shaped by Chinese and Portuguese influences.

Behind the scenes, IPIM played a pivotal role to support event organisers. Close collaboration every step of the way, from early preparation to on-site delivery, helped organisers navigate logistical complexities with confidence. “Thanks to the very responsive support from IPIM, challenges were managed smoothly,” Lee notes.

For a city renowned for its vibrancy and vision, hosting AIE and ICEIC were defining moments for Macao. These MICE undertakings weren’t successful exhibitions; they were declarations that this global city is building a future – for both its local stakeholders and international clients – powered by innovation, collaboration and limitless possibility.
