Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands (MBS), which features the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, is facing further delays to its billion-dollar plans for expansion.

Last year, parent company Las Vegas Sands said the works would be delayed by a year, meaning they were expected to be completed by 2026, following an original deadline of 2025.

The integrated resort said in its most recent report that it does not expect to be able to begin construction by the given timeline, which was set for April 2023.

In its report, it said: “We are in the process of reviewing the budget and timing of the MBS expansion based on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and other factors. As a result, the construction cost estimate and construction schedule were not delivered to the lenders by the extended deadline.”

The resort said it was in discussion with the Singapore government on the length of the timeline extension, and the start and completion of the expansion project. If MBS does not secure a revised extension, it will be in breach of the agreement, which was originally announced in April 2019.

The key elements of the development include a state-of-the-art 15,000-seat arena featuring the latest in technology, a luxury hotel tower and additional MICE space.
