Business Events Sarawak (BE Sarawak) has launched Sarawak's first Zero Food Waste to Landfill initiative, a pilot programme aimed at reducing food waste generated by business events.
The initiative made its debut during the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) 51st World Polymer Congress (MACRO 2026), held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching from 28 to 31 July. It forms part of BE Sarawak's wider sustainability agenda to improve the environmental impact of meetings and conventions hosted in the state.
Under the pilot, surplus food and food waste from the event are separated and diverted from landfill through a dedicated waste management process. The programme brings together venue operators, caterers, waste management specialists and sustainability partners to test a scalable model that could be adopted at future business events in Sarawak.
According to BE Sarawak, the initiative is designed to demonstrate how business events can contribute to the circular economy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste disposal. Data collected during the pilot will be used to evaluate its effectiveness and inform future implementation across the state's business events sector.
The Zero Food Waste to Landfill pilot is the latest sustainability initiative introduced by BE Sarawak as it continues to position the destination around legacy-driven and environmentally responsible business events.
