Qatar sets its sights on the Olympics

Qatar is aiming be the first country in the MENA to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has confirmed it has entered a dialogue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of its official bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that Qatar’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games marks a new chapter in the nation’s development and highlights its growing international reputation for delivering world-class sporting events.

The QOC affirmed that if selected, Qatar would be the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games – presenting a unique Arab Olympic model built on diversity, openness and sustainability. The bid also aims to elevate regional representation, empower Arab youth and harness the power of sport as a force for hope and peace.

HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the QOC and chairman of the Bid Committee said: “We believe in the power of sport to bring people and cultures closer together, to empower individuals and to unlock human potential, especially among youth. Our participation in the ongoing dialogue around hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036 reflects a national vision that sees sport as a driver of development and a platform for promoting mutual understanding and peace among nations.”

HE Sheikh Joaan added that Qatar currently has 95% of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games and it has a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities.
