The recent Malaysia Business Events Week (MBEW) 2024 spotlighted the latest advancements in technology and sustainability within the business events sector, with attendees engaging in panel discussions, hands-on workshops and networking opportunities.

“Our focus on technology and sustainability stems from the belief that these two pillars are essential for the continued growth and evolution of the business events industry,” explained Noor Azlan Abu Bakar, MyCEB director of business development.

“Technology enables us to innovate, improve efficiency, and enhance attendee engagement, while sustainability ensures that we are building an industry that is responsible and future-proof. By addressing these areas, we are responding to global trends and meeting the increasing demand for environmentally friendly events.”

The ninth edition of MBEW aimed to position Malaysia as the leading hub for business events in the Asian region, promoting innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth to strengthen Malaysia’s standing in the global business events industry.

“Our focus on technology and sustainability stems from the belief that these two pillars are essential for the continued growth and evolution of the business events industry,” said MyCEB director of business development Noor Azlan Abu Bakar.

Legacy implementation for industry growth

MBEW 2024 also featured the highly anticipated EVENTXPO 2024, organised in collaboration with the Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS).

Other legacy initiatives implemented included training programmes and workshops, fostering partnerships with local communities and businesses to help boost the local economy and create sustainable benefits.

“The business events sector is a vital component of Malaysia’s economy, contributing significantly to gross domestic product (GDP) and job creation. The sector acts as a catalyst for tourism, infrastructure development, and the establishment of international partnerships,” said Noor Azlan.

He further emphasised that Malaysia’s “strategic location at the heart of Southeast Asia” made the country a “natural hub for international events”.

“Coupled with our diverse cultural experiences and world-class hospitality, Malaysia also offers a strong commitment to sustainability, implementing eco-friendly practices across our venues and events.” This, he said, contributed to Malaysia’s competitive pricing and value-for-money advantage.

Future plans for the MyCEB

The industry will continue to grow to encompass both traditional and hybrid events, said Noor Azlan, and the sector continues to recover. Looking forward, more emphasis will be placed on sustainability initiatives and technological advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality to play a larger role in enhancing event experiences.

“At the bureau, our top priorities will be to further strengthen Malaysia's brand as a preferred destination for business events,” said Noor Azlan. “We will focus on promoting innovation and sustainability as the core pillars of our industry, expanding international partnerships, and building capacity within the sector to ensure that Malaysia remains at the forefront of the global business events industry.”
