WSDN 2026 is organised by the Kulliyyah of Nursing, International Islamic University Malaysia, with support from the World Society of Disaster Nursing, Business Events Sarawak, and other organisations.
Augmented reality-based training will take centre stage at the 9th International Research Conference of the World Society of Disaster Nursing (WSDN 2026), which will be held in Kuching from 17 to 19 September 2026.
The conference is expected to gather more than 500 healthcare professionals, disaster managers and emergency response specialists from around the world at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
A programme highlight is the use of augmented reality tabletop exercises (AR-TTX) to simulate real-life disaster scenarios, which can strengthen decision-making, coordination and response in emergency situations, according to Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, Conference Chair of WSDN 2026.
Held under the theme Accelerate Networking: A Catalyst to Go Over the Horizon, WSDN 2026 will facilitate exchange on emerging technologies, innovative solutions and practical strategies to enhance disaster preparedness, response and recovery across diverse healthcare systems.
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Sim Kui Hian, said the conference aligns with the state’s long-term public health and resilience priorities.
“From natural disasters to public health emergencies, Sarawak understands the importance of preparedness and resilience,” he said, adding that the event supports Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 by strengthening future-ready public health systems.
Beyond its professional agenda, WSDN 2026 is expected to deliver economic benefits to the host destination. Organisers estimate the conference will generate approximately RM4.1 million (US$1.04 million) in total economic impact and support more than 300 jobs across Sarawak’s tourism, hospitality and services sectors.
Business Events Sarawak acting CEO Jason Tan Chin Foo added: “WSDN 2026 provides a platform to examine how local communities can play an active role in disaster preparedness and response. This emphasis on shared outcomes, capacity building, and long-term value reflects Sarawak’s commitment to collaborative, impact-focused business events that deliver meaningful benefits for people and communities.”
The conference programme will feature international experts in disaster nursing and emergency response, including Aileen M. Marty from the University of Miami, Jamie Ranse from Griffith University and Sonoe Mashino from the University of Hyogo, alongside regional practitioners and researchers.
