Designed by Zaha Hadid, Greater Bay Area Sporting Center is situated in a 70-hectare park.
The Greater Bay Area Cultural and Sporting Center in Guangzhou has officially kicked off operations, having recently hosted its inaugural sporting event.
A men’s basketball competition was held at the venue and the Guangdong Football Super League will also be held at the stadium later this month.
The venue, designed by Zaha Hadid, is situated in a 70-hectare park, and features an 80,000-seat stadium, a 20,000-seat arena for basketball and a 4,000-seat aquatics centre.
Built by the China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group and other partners, construction on the venue began in 2023. As well as offering local community sports activities, the venue will host major national and international sporting events, as well as cultural performances.
The centre’s fluid form design is inspired by the hulls of the region’s traditional sailing ships, and the building features natural ventilation techniques, with a roof sheltering visitors from the elements and enabling rising warm air to be naturally vented outside the building.
