China’s largest standalone cultural centre will soon open in Shenzhen, set to enhance cultural exchange in the Greater Bay Area when it opens for trial operations this September.
Located on Minzhi Avenue in Longhua District, officials have described the US$175 million landmark as a “living room” for local culture.
The Shenzhen Cultural Center spans 31,400 sqm over nine floors – inclusive of two basement levels – and offers a variety of venue options across 83,300 sqm of floor space.
It will feature a total of seven functional spaces for public-private use.
These include a performance area which houses a 1,200-seat grand theatre, a 500-seat small theatre, a 500-seat multi-function hall, and a 90-seat black-box theatre.
The training space comprises 29 classrooms to allow course ranging across dance, arts, music, calligraphy, flower arrangement, photography, and other cultural and artistic programmes.
Exhibition options include a gallery on basement one, four halls on level four inclusive of a digital exhibition space, as well as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) exhibition hall area supported by an artifact storage area.
The creation space offers six studios, two cultural and creative spaces, as well as video and editing rooms, and recording studios.
The public will be able to explore the open plaza which will offer zones dedicated to traditional culture, community culture, youths, the arts, and a rooftop garden.
A library and reading area, cafe and bookstores will be added into the mix as well.
To better connect with the public, the new centre will also offer art training, exhibitions, lectures, as well as working with partners to offer study tours and themed exhibitions, to name a few.
