Helgen brings more than 22 years of hospitality leadership experience at Marriott International.
JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo, which debuted in October 2025 as the brand’s new Japan flagship hotel, has announced the appointment of Jakob Helgen as general manager.
With more than 22 years of global hospitality leadership experience at Marriott International, Helgen will oversee all hotel operations, guiding the continued growth and positioning of JW Marriott’s newest luxury destination in Japan.
A native of Sweden, he most recently served as area VP for Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar from 2019 to 2024. Under his leadership, Marriott International expanded its footprint across the region from 50 to 80 hotels, including a doubling of the company’s presence in Vietnam from 10 to 20 hotels.
Previously, Helgen held senior leadership roles as market VP for South China and later as area VP overseeing Hong Kong, Macau, Hainan and Taiwan, where he played an instrumental role in Marriott International’s expansion into the Macau and Taiwan markets.
He began his career with Marriott International in 2002 as director of food and beverage at Renaissance Riverside Hotel Saigon. Helgen subsequently held operational leadership roles at JW Marriott Mumbai and JW Marriott Seoul, before joining the Hong Kong regional office in 2007 as area director of operations for China.
Prior to joining Marriott International, he built a strong foundation in food and beverage operations at Relais & Châteaux properties and Michelin-starred restaurants across Sweden, Norway, the UK and France.
