Japan is experiencing one of its worst influenza outbreaks in decades, with over 317,000 cases reported in the final week of December 2024, significantly surpassing the warning threshold. This surge is mainly attributed to increased travel during the holiday season and a lack of widespread flu exposure during the Covid-19 pandemic years.

The flu outbreak has strained Japan’s healthcare system, with hospitals overwhelmed and shortages of key antiviral medications like Tamiflu. Major pharmaceutical companies are struggling to meet demand, leading to temporary halts in distribution until late January or February 2025.

Implications for MICE planners

For event planners with upcoming gatherings in Japan, the health crisis presents several hurdles that must be proactively addressed to ensure smooth operations and attendee safety.

Event planners should consider the potential impact on attendee health, especially for vulnerable groups who may need medication during their stay.

This flu surge could affect event logistics, as increased illness may lead to attendee cancellations or absenteeism. Event planners must anticipate these disruptions and develop contingency plans for potential changes in participant numbers or speaker availability.

Recommended health precautions

Health officials are urging flu vaccinations and other precautions to reduce the spread. To ensure the health and safety of attendees, planners should advise the following measures:

  1. Vaccinations: Encourage participants to get vaccinated before travelling.

  2. Masks: Advise wearing masks, especially in crowded settings, to prevent the spread of the virus.

  3. Health monitoring: Remind attendees to monitor their health and seek medical attention if they feel unwell to prevent further transmission.

  4. Venue coordination: Work with hotels and venues to implement health protocols, such as temperature checks and enhanced sanitation, to maintain a safe environment for guests.

Japan is also battling a significant avian influenza outbreak, resulting in the culling of over five million birds in January 2025. While this may not directly impact most events, those organising food-related activities should be aware of potential disruptions to poultry supply chains and rising costs.

Despite these challenges, Japan remains an attractive destination for meetings and events. To navigate the flu outbreak, event planners should stay informed, implement health measures and be flexible in their planning.
