Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) has partnered with the Events Industry Council (EIC) to introduce the Sustainable Event Professional Certificate (SEPC) programme to East Malaysia for the first time, as the destination continues to strengthen sustainability capabilities across its business events sector.
The agreement will make the internationally recognised certification available to Sarawak's business events professionals, providing training in sustainable event planning, social impact, accessibility, responsible procurement, supply chain management, measurement and reporting.
BESarawak described the need for skilled professionals with recognised expertise as “critical”, as international organisations, associations, and event owners place greater emphasis on sustainability standards and responsible event delivery.
Hii Chang Kee, chairman of BESarawak and Deputy State Secretary (Operation), said the programme aligns with the bureau's focus on developing industry capabilities and sustainability leadership.
Jason Tan Chin Foo, CEO of BESarawak said that the move supports Sarawak's broader development goals under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“What makes SEPC important is that it is not only about making events greener. Sustainability can be integrated into decision-making, operations, partnerships, measurement, and long-term impact creation across the entire business events ecosystem,” Tan stated.
The SEPC programme equips participants with practical knowledge across the full event lifecycle, covering areas including environmental and social impact, stakeholder engagement, responsible business practices and performance measurement.
The first SEPC programme in Sarawak will be held in Kuching on 20–21 August 2026 and will be open to registered BESPartners.
