A new arena to replace the 35-year-old Singapore Indoor Stadium will
be "among the best-in-class globally", according to Singapore Minister
for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, when he briefed the media
recently on his ministry's spending plans for the year.
The new venue, which will be built next to the existing Indoor
Stadium, will provide a competitive advantage to draw top-tier events as
Singapore seeks to host more sophisticated events that have faster
turnaround times, more versatile hospitality suites, and enhanced
seating and experience.
As part of the Kallang Alive precinct, the arena will be built whilst
the Indoor Stadium continues to operate to minimise disruption to the
events and programming pipeline. The 12,000 pax Indoor Stadium’s future
is yet to be decided.
Past major sports and entertainment events at the Indoor Stadium
include performances by Kanye West, Tina Turner, and the Women's Tennis
Association Finals.
About S$165 million (US$124)will be available over four years for a
Major Sports Event Fund to draw more world-class sporting events to
Singapore. Last year, Singapore drew Olympic Esports Week, the World
Table Tennis Singapore Smash and HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens.
