An aquaponic farm now grows at Singapore Expo

The new aquaponic urban farm will produce vegetables and fish on-site to create a closed-loop sustainable system.

Singapore Expo is making significant strides in becoming a sustainable venue through innovative investments.

Alongside sustainable food practices and herb gardens, the venue is implementing aquaponic urban farming to produce vegetables and fish on-site. The fish wastewater is upcycled to water the plants, forming a closed-loop sustainable urban farming system.

Working with local partners, Singapore Expo advocates sustainable farming and minimises its carbon footprint by converting food waste into water using a food digester at Timbre+ food park.

Chua Wee Phong, Constellar's interim group CEO, aims to lead the way in eco-friendly MICE venues. The investments made ensure structural changes in day-to-day operations, product offerings, and services, with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2024 while supporting sustainable events in the MICE industry.

In-house electric power

Next year, a 10-megawatt rooftop solar PV system will be Singapore's largest single-site solar rooftop installation, generating clean energy equivalent to powering 4,000 three-room apartments for a year, reducing 91% of the venue's carbon emissions.

Installation of 20 Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points, powered by solar energy, supports Singapore's electric vehicle adoption and reduces transportation emissions.

New alliances and industry initiatives

Singapore Expo established the Singapore Expo Advantage Programme, collaborating with strategic partners in various sectors.

It is committed to the 'Net Zero Carbon Events' initiative by the Joint Meetings Industry Council and has joined SACEOS's Global MICE Sustainability Alliance. The venue piloted a waste measurement methodology at BuildTech Asia 2023 to explore green solutions for exhibitions.

Future plans involve measuring event waste at Food & Hotel Asia 2024 and empowering event organisers with a data-supported Sustainability Report Card to track their footprint at the venue.
