Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) has introduced the BE Associate programme aimed at building a sustainable pipeline of talent for Malaysia’s fast-evolving business events sector.

Said to be the first-of-its-kind effort in the country, the programme is complimentary and exposes students to real industry settings, with opportunities for mentorship and direct employment pathways.

PCEB chief executive Ashwin Gunasekeran said the initiative is in line with the state’s push to future-proof the industry. “Sustainability in this context is about continuity – developing talent, enhancing capability, and ensuring the business events industry remains competitive and adaptive,” he said, adding that BE Associate aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world expectations.

With business events being an economic pillar, the programme has also secured backing from state leadership. Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow, said: “By investing in talent development and industry readiness, we are not only supporting the growth of the sector today, but also ensuring its long-term resilience and global competitiveness. This initiative reflects our commitment to building a strong, future-ready workforce that will continue to drive Penang’s economic development.”

What’s in it for aspiring event profs

Unlike traditional coursework, BE Associate places students directly within live event environments, where they can gain experience across operational and execution roles.

Through the programme, students will have the opportunity to work alongside industry practitioners and receive mentorship in real time, enabling them to build practical skills while expanding professional networks.

The curriculum spans core competencies such as event planning, risk management, venue coordination, finance and marketing.

A supporting digital platform connects students with industry players, opening access to internships, job opportunities and continued professional development.

Need for early real-world exposure

Local students already have access to event management programme through institutions such as YTL International College of Hotel Management. At the professional level, Malaysians can pursue globally recognised certifications such as the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) by the Events Industry Council.

These pathways have traditionally been either academic or mid-career focused, with limited structured exposure for students at an early stage.

Supporting future growth

With the introduction of BE Associate, PCEB is reinforcing Penang’s ambition to position itself as a forward-looking hub for MICE.

By aligning education with industry needs and fostering closer collaboration between students and professionals, the programme aims to ensure a steady pipeline of skilled talent – a key factor as destinations across Asia compete for global business events.
