Convention centres have long been reliable, business-friendly venues – places people passed through briefly yet purposefully. Increasingly, however, the most forward-looking venues are evolving into something more: contemporary “third places” that sit between work and home, hosting not just events, but communities.

Big-bang moments for communities

As fitness movements gain momentum, enthusiasts now train across countries and cities, connected by shared values of discipline and self-improvement. When they finally meet, events become “big-bang” moments, validating not only athletic performance but also a sense of belonging.

A case in point is Bangkok’s Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC), which hosted the Redline Fitness Games in December 2025. The event brought together thousands of individuals, teams and corporate groups to test strength, endurance and agility across 12 competition stations. Several athletes remarked that the venue felt “international”, underscoring the importance of spaces that combine technical capability at scale with the ability to foster connection among diverse, high-energy communities.

When complex design feels effortless

Redline was a multi-layered production, with competition zones, athlete flows, spectator seating and partner activations running simultaneously. “The ceiling height, loading access and open floor plan allowed us to design competition arenas that met international fitness event standards,” said Susama Floesser, operations director, Redline Fitness Games Bangkok. “This directly influenced programming – enabling multiple race waves, dynamic movement zones and clear athlete flow.”

QSNCC’s modern design, clear wayfinding and spacious common areas helped minimise congestion and stress even during peak periods. “The scale and quality of the space reinforced Redline’s positioning as a premium fitness competition,” Floesser added.

Communities, however, are sustained by storytelling as much as by space. QSNCC’s adaptable halls, audiovisual systems and rigging points supported impactful visual branding and experiential activations. Combined with the venue’s clean, contemporary aesthetic and subtle Thai-inspired design, these elements translated well into photos and videos, strengthening post-event storytelling across social media. In this way, the venue supported not just the event, but its afterlife as communities continue to grow online.

Extending the experience beyond the halls

Successful third places allow people to move fluidly between formal and informal modes of interaction. QSNCC’s proximity to Benjakitti Park, along with lifestyle offerings such as the Bangkok Active Lifestyle Mall (BALM) within the centre, extended the Redline experience beyond the halls. Athletes, spectators and partners flowed naturally between competition, socialising and recreation.

“It aligns perfectly with our audience – active, health-conscious individuals who value fitness, wellness and lifestyle experiences beyond competition,” Floesser said. For planners, this spatial continuity transformed Redline from a contained competition into an immersive Bangkok experience, opening opportunities for pre- and post-event programming and deeper brand engagement.

Continuity builds belonging

Redline’s organisers have indicated strong interest in returning, citing QSNCC’s alignment with the event’s long-term vision of becoming a flagship fitness competition in Bangkok and the wider region.

With 78,500 sqm of flexible event space – including eight exhibition halls, four plenary halls, four ballrooms and 50 meeting rooms – QSNCC allows events to expand without changing venues. When communities gather in the same place year after year, venues become landmarks in collective memory and anchors of belonging.
