The Sarawak government is making significant investments to position the state as a premier destination for global events and cultural experiences.
Sarawak Performing Arts Centre
Among the most notable projects is a RM300 million (US$69 million) investment to transform the old Sarawak Legislative Assembly building into the Sarawak Performing Arts Centre. This new facility, inspired by London's Royal Albert Hall, will feature a world-class stage and sound system to showcase diverse artistic talents and enrich Sarawak's cultural landscape.
Sarawak premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg indicated that the investment is aimed at creating a dedicated space for the celebration of Sarawak's vibrant arts scene, spanning performances, music, culture, and other entertainment options for both locals and tourists.
Expected to be completed by 2027, the multi-venue performing arts centre will not only raise the profile of Sarawak's arts and creative industries but will also provide facilities capable of hosting professional productions. Located within Kuching's tourist precinct, it is set to become a central hub for cultural exchange and artistic expression, stimulating tourism, supporting the local economy, and creating jobs.
Expansion of Borneo Convention Centre Kuching
In addition to the arts centre, Sarawak is expanding its flagship conference and exhibition venue, the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), with the BCCK 2 project. Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah shared that the expanded facility will be able to host over 10,000 delegates by 2027.
Currently, BCCK can accommodate around 5,000 delegates. The new BCCK 2 extension will feature a significantly larger exhibition area, catering to approximately 10,000 delegates or more. This expanded capacity is especially timely, as Sarawak will host the International Water Association’s World Water Congress and Exhibition in 2028, an event requiring a venue of substantial scale.
