In New South Wales (NSW), the Minns Labor Government has committed A$17 million (US$13 million) for the next stage of planning of a beachfront sports, entertainment and events precinct in Wollongong.

At the centre of the proposal is a new WIN Arena with a capacity of 9,500, almost doubling the current 5,300 seats, located just steps from Wollongong’s beaches and the city’s CBD.

The expanded arena is designed to significantly boost the city’s ability to host large-scale sporting, entertainment and business events.

A win for sports

The broader redevelopment will also deliver a revitalised WIN Stadium, including a new northern grandstand and an extended, reconfigured southern grandstand. Upgrades to player changerooms will support the continued growth of both men’s and women’s sport across Illawarra and NSW.

The game-day experience will be further enhanced through modern upgrades, including new scoreboards and ribbon boards, improved sports lighting and an upgraded stadium sound system.

New business events opportunities

Once completed, the Wollongong sports and entertainment precinct is expected to host up to 150 events annually, generating an estimated A$550 million in additional economic activity for the region.

Additionally, a new beachside complex will add flexible multi-purpose spaces suitable for functions and special events. These venues will sit alongside a café, kiosk and public amenities in the complex.

From sporting venue to year-round destination

The facilities are intended to activate the precinct beyond match days, positioning it as a year-round destination for diverse purposes, including business events.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Member for Wollongong Paul Scully said the redevelopment would turn the area “from a part-time venue into a full-time destination for sports, entertainment, functions and fun”.

Total visitor enhancements

Both WIN Arena and WIN Stadium will feature expanded corporate hospitality areas, additional function rooms, increased amenities and site-wide accessibility improvements, including new entry gates and enhanced wheelchair access.

Food, beverage and merchandise offerings across the precinct will also be upgraded as part of the redevelopment.

Economic boon

During construction, the project is expected to support more than 600 full-time jobs, with an estimated 1,100 roles created over the life of the development.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said the investment reflects Wollongong’s growing importance as a regional powerhouse. “By nearly doubling the capacity of WIN Arena and upgrading WIN Stadium, we’re creating a venue capable of hosting up to 150 events a year. That means more concerts, more sporting events and more reasons for people to visit, stay longer and spend locally,” he said.

Minister for Sport and Tourism Steve Kamper added that the precinct would deliver long-term benefits for tourism, jobs and the local economy by attracting more live events to the region.
