The Events Industry Council has launched its updated Certified Meeting Professional exam, aligned with the organisation's 2025 CMP International Standards (CMP-IS), which provide a future-focused framework for the evolving landscape of the global business-events industry.

The CMP designation currently is held by more than 13,000 meeting professionals across more than 55 countries. The designation covers expertise in strategic planning, operations, risk management and stakeholder engagement, as well as new areas covering sustainability, technology integration and outcome evaluation.

“As our sector continues to evolve, adapt and innovate, the CMP program is evolving to ensure its relevance now and into the future,” said Amy Calvert, president and CEO of the EIC. “The updated exam reflects the expertise and resilience our industry demands – and the leadership qualities that define today’s top professionals.”

Senthil Gopinath, CEO of the International Congress and Convention Association and current EIC board chair, added, “The updated exam reinforces our commitment to supporting our sector’s workforce and the highest level of professional standards.”

A global project

The launch of the new exam follows a multiyear, practitioner-led process with input from 1,000 volunteer subject-matter experts around the world. Using job-task analyses, competency mapping and rigorous content review, this community helped shape the revised CMP International Standards that were released in January to ensure the CMP credential remains relevant for the future.

“This update to the CMP International Standards reflects how far our industry has come and where we’re headed,” said Heather Seasholtz, CMP Fellow, DES, vice president of operations for CM Event Solutions, and chair of the CMP Governance Commission.

What’s new in the standards

The revised standards include key updates, such as:

  • A new domain for Sustainability and Social Impact, reinforcing the sector’s role in advancing environmental and societal outcomes. This includes carbon-footprint management, materials management and supporting advancements in inclusive design and well-being to ensure events contribute positively to both the planet and diverse, thriving communities.

  • Expanded content on technology integration, addressing innovations in virtual and hybrid delivery, data analytics, digital engagement and AI, allowing for evolving knowledge and practices as events adapt to emerging technologies.

  • A sharper focus on evaluation and ROI, helping professionals quantify the impact of their meetings and communicate their value to stakeholders.

  • A renewed emphasis on risk assessment, enabling more strategic, inclusive and resilient event-design strategies that anticipate challenges and foster adaptability.

  • Greater global relevance and alignment with contemporary practices, ensuring applicability across diverse regions and evolving industry approaches.

The updated exam was beta-tested in April and May, with participation from a diverse mix of candidates. This was followed by a two-month scoring blackout for statistical validation.

The updated version now is live and open to all eligible candidates. Those whose testing windows were affected by the blackout have received automatic extensions through Nov. 1.

Shoring up a trusted certification

As noted by the EIC, since its inception in 1985, the CMP designation has been a benchmark for professional performance and integrity in the meetings industry. Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility criteria and successfully complete an exam that is grounded in a globally validated body of knowledge, requiring professional competency and credibility.

The new exam retains its multiple-choice format, with scenario-based questions designed to assess applied knowledge and strategic decision-making.

Updated study resources, including a new edition of the EIC Manual, will be released in late 2025 or early 2026. The manual will reflect the updated CMP-IS, with content that mirrors current knowledge and practice. Interim materials are available until the new manual is published. To support a smooth transition, there will be a designated period following the release of the new manual, allowing candidates time to prepare using the updated resource.
