Luxury business hotels in the APAC region have a mixed performance when it comes to robust Wi-Fi connectivity, with some offering much higher download speed than others.

This is according to a report from Ookla, a provider of network intelligence and connectivity insights. The report analysed Wi-Fi performance in selected five-star hotels across Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Bali.

It said the Wi-Fi download speeds of selected hotels across these APAC business destinations show significant variation, with some properties delivering top-tier connectivity while others fall short. Hotels with median download download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps, which enable business travellers to access ultra-high-definition video conferencing, large file transfers, and lag-free virtual collaboration, were classed as ‘top performers’.

Top performers

For business travellers who rely on ultra-fast connections for high-definition video calls, large file transfers, and seamless virtual collaboration, five hotels stood out:

  1. The Peninsula Tokyo – 188.57 Mbps

  2. Rosewood Hong Kong – 113.21 Mbps

  3. InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong – 109.74 Mbps

  4. Anantara Siam Bangkok – 106.51 Mbps

  5. Shangri-La Hotel Sydney – 100.37 Mbps

These hotels offer speeds well above 100 Mbps, ensuring a smooth experience for business professionals needing uninterrupted connectivity.

Good performers

Ookla said ‘good performers’ offer solid wi-fi performance, ranging between 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps, which are sufficient for most business activities, including video conferencing, cloud-based work, and high-speed browsing. These include:

  • Island Shangri-La Hong Kong – 99.33 Mbps

  • Four Seasons Hotel Sydney – 99.05 Mbps

  • Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok – 88.58 Mbps

  • Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo – 80.68 Mbps

  • The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo – 73.46 Mbps

  • Marina Bay Sands Singapore – 70.51 Mbps

  • W Seminyak Bali – 56.63 Mbps

  • The St. Regis Bali Resort – 50.25 Mbps

Speed laggards

Some luxury hotels in APAC struggle to provide competitive Wi-Fi speeds, with median download speeds below 50 Mbps. These may impact business travellers who rely on high-speed internet for virtual meetings, large file transfers, or streaming-intensive tasks.

In APC, these high-end hotels ranked among the lowest:

  • The Fullerton Hotel Singapore – 46.90 Mbps

  • Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo – 46.74 Mbps

  • The Peninsula Bangkok – 43.42 Mbps

  • Bulgari Resort Bali – 28.75 Mbps

  • Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong – 23.74 Mbps

  • Raffles Singapore – 21.35 Mbps Mbps

  • InterContinental Singapore – 20.03 Mbps

Three hotels in Singapore fell into this category, despite Singapore’s reputation for strong broadband infrastructure. Ookla noted that poor hotel Wi-Fi performance is likely due to network configuration rather than national broadband capacity.

Other underperforming properties were found across Tokyo, Bangkok, Bali, and Hong Kong, highlighting inconsistencies in connectivity across the region.
