Kicking off a new chapter of accelerated expansion of non-gaming MGM properties beyond Mainland China, MGM Shenzhen Prince Bay officially opened on 10 September with 3,000sqm of event space and a waterfront location in Shekou.

The hotel under MGM China's newly expanding hospitality and hotel management arm is located near Shekou Cruise Home Port and within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), with major GBA cities accessible within about 60 minutes.

New game-free chapter for MGM

The launch follows a recent shakeup up that saw MGM's non-gaming unit come under the full ownership of MGM China. Operating through MGM Hospitality Group (Asia Pacific), MGM Asia Pacific today focuses on asset-light hospitality management.

A source told M&C Asia that MGM’s non-gaming, portfolio is now set for accelerated expansion – including beyond Greater China – after nearly two decades of subdued development under MGM Resorts International’s joint venture with Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Mainland China. In 19 years, the joint venture resulted in only around eight non-gaming MGM hotels, all of which were in Mainland China.

MICE and more in first no-game MGM beyond the Mainland

In Shenzhen, MGM China had partnered developer Yunnan Xiangfeng Industrial Group to launch the property.

MGM Shenzhen Prince Bay features 3,000sqm of flexible event space, with an inventory that includes multi-function meeting rooms, boardrooms and VIP lounges, supported by a 420sqm foyer with floor-to-ceiling windows and harbour views.

An 800 sqm terrace adds an outdoor option for receptions, weddings and cocktail events.

The property offers 298 ocean-view rooms and suites ranging from 50sqm to 364sqm. Room categories include panoramic sea-view rooms, terrace suites, sky suites and a presidential suite.

There are five dining concepts, namely Yu Hoi Heen Chinese Restaurant, MEET PLUS Yunnan-Guizhou-Sichuan Restaurant, Festival All-Day Dining, The PURPLE Rooftop Sky Bar and the Lobby Lounge.

The hotel sits within a wider cultural and lifestyle precinct that includes K11 ECOAST and the Sea World Culture and Arts Center. Its location, cruise-port connection and surrounding arts and dining offer may be relevant for organisers seeking destination-led programmes or pre- and post-event itineraries in Shenzhen.

Yang Lirong, chairman of Yunnan Xiangfeng Industrial Group, added: “Prince Bay is a crucial window connecting the Greater Bay Area with the world. By joining forces with MGM, we are creating a landmark hotel that embodies both the distinctive character of the bay and world-class standards – one that will catalyse the advancement of business and cultural tourism in Prince Bay and invigorate local consumption.”
