LONDON - October proved to be a busy month with a hotel construction boom in Asia Pacific racking up a 20.7% increase compared to the previous year, according to hotel research company STR.
Its data showed 2,039 projects accounting for 450,231 rooms currently in the final phase of construction in October.
The fastest growing area for new hotels was in the upper-midscale segment, which represented the largest percentage increase of 33.3% year over year and about 107,795 rooms being added.
This was followed by the upscale segment, which is welcoming another 115,636 rooms (+15.2%). The upper upscale segment saw a 12.7% growth with 98,523 additional rooms.
In the region, five countries reported more than 20,000 rooms under construction.
China led with 232,901 rooms, which represented 8.8% of the country's existing supply, followed by Japan (36,532 rooms, 5.3% of existing supply).
