Malaysia's UNESCO-designated Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve will soon be serviced by a new gondola system, scheduled for completion in 2027, amid broader development encompassing attractions and visitor infrastructure in the area.
The Penang Hill Cable Car is expected to be up by March 2027, followed by a few additional months for commissioning.
Historic first
Able to carry up to 1,400 passengers per hour during peak periods, the new transportation mode up Penang’s oldest and most popular hill resort will significantly boost capacity and share the growing passenger load with the century-old funicular train service.
Spanning one of the region's oldest tropical rainforests, the eight-passenger capacity cable car gondolas are expected to take less than 10 minutes to complete the 2.73km journey, starting from near the Penang Botanic Gardens entrance before gradually ascending some 700m above sea level to reach the peak of Penang Hill.
Delegate-friendly itinerary
Apart from exploring newly introduced walkable trails at the nearby Tiger Hill, visitors can spend time visiting recently launched places of attractions like The Habitat, an eco-tourism venue filled with endemic flora and fauna.

This includes Penang Hill's very own endemic vampire crab which makes its home in The Habitat's bromeliad garden.
Other highlights in this park, that comprises of a 1.6km nature trail straddling Penang Hill's permanent rainforest reserve, include the Langur Way Canopy Walk and Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk that provide unobstructed 360-degree panoramic views of the island from Penang's highest vantage point.
Learning opportunities
In an effort to create awareness of climate change, visitors are also exposed to the many important roles played by the rainforest. Apart from serving as Penang's main water catchment area, other key roles played by this ancient but fragile ecosystem include crucial nutrient recycling, atmospheric purification, carbon storage and soil stability together with erosion aversion.
Completing the experience is a visit to the Penang Hill Gallery. Located within a historic bungalow named Edgecliff, it is a treasure trove of information that explores the hill's geology, biodiversity, culture and heritage, and how transportation up Penang Hill has made great strides since the early days.
Multi-attraction boost
The Penang Botanic Gardens area, where the new gondola system connects, is also set for enhancements that include addressing decade-old traffic and accessibility challenges, while enhancing the Gardens’ heritage status through infrastructure, landscaping and recreational upgrades.
