Forget plaques and gift cards. Nothing spurs employees than, perhaps, the thrill of tangible rewards.
Ahead of the Lunar New Year, Chinese industrial manufacturer Henan Mining Group made waves by turning its annual gala into a team celebration phenomenon – complete with competitive cash counting and bonuses in the millions brought home the old-fashioned way.
On 13 February 2026, the company’s annual celebration hit a fever pitch when over RMB60 million (US$8.7 million) was handed out on the spot, part of a total RMB180 million in bonuses earmarked for employees this year. The remaining payout was distributed online.
According to local financial outlets, the combined employee bonus amounted to approximately two-thirds of the company’s profits in 2025.
The gala incentive gimmick quickly became a major talking point, with clips circulating widely on Chinese social media.
Also drawing attention was the high-stakes gamification of payouts, which drove competition, tension – and humour – to the extremes.
In the mass cash-counting challenge, teams nominate their fastest counter to tally large sums in a race against the clock, while colleagues watch and cheer. If the nominated team member counts the final amount correctly, the full bonus goes to the team.
Henan Mining Group had also gone viral on social media last year for its over-the-top gala payout.
For planners in the corporate events and staff recognition space, the Henan Mining Group event carries significance beyond social virality. It marks a shift towards experiential incentives that blend team-building with cultural outcomes – and that employees continue talking about long after the payout.
