If Singaporeans are asked what’s the best thing a visitor can do in their country, chances are that most locals are going to say “eat”. Singapore has long been lauded as a foodie paradise with its plethora of gastronomical options, from affordable traditional dishes ranging across all Asian ethnicities to the innovative haute cuisine that derives inspiration from all corners of the globe.

According to the 2022 Michelin Guide Singapore, the country is now home to three 3-starred Michelin restaurants, seven 2-starred Michelin restaurants, and 42 one-starred Michelin restaurants. Jaan by Kirk Westaway is a new 2-starred Michelin restaurant in this year’s list, which also won the accolade for ‘Outstanding Fine Dining Experience’ in Singapore Tourism Awards 2022.

Travel industry veteran, Loh Lik Peng, who’s the chairman of Singapore Cruise Centre, and CEO of Unlisted Collection, the parent company that owns over 20 restaurants, had the honour of receiving Michelin stars this year for six restaurants under Unlisted Collection. These include the 3-starred Restaurant Zen, 2-starred Cloudstreet, and 1-starred Nouri, Basque Kitchen by Aitor, Burnt Ends and Maguerite.

Though people usually assume that Michelin starred restaurants are on the pricier side and targeted more toward affluent diners or special occasions, there are restaurants in Singapore that are able to fit, or in this case, feed, tourists on all kinds of budgets. The 1-Michelin-star Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle which has been operating for almost a century since 1932 serves up a bowl of pork noodles, known colloquially in Singapore as ‘bak chor mee’, for only S$6 (US$4.30).
