Steep in Balinese intrigue at Bumi Duadari

Art workshops led by local artists; afternoon teas on the terrace; wedding ceremonies beneath brilliantly-coloured canopies - these are just some of the activities that grace Bumi Duadari, the private estate of architect and Indonesian art collector Hendra Hadiprana that is also open to private functions.

Having previously transformed his family's rice fields into The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah in nearby Ubud, Hadiprana sought to build himself a new hideaway. It was then that he chanced upon Bumi Duadari.  Then a mere plot of unkempt land bordering the Petanu River, it has since been reimagined as a forestry estate consisting of him and his wife's home; bungalows built for his three children and their families that are surrounded by tiers that reflect Bali's paddy fields; and Balai Barong, an open-sided pavilion that seats 24 for meals - in the middle.

Spanning 3,000 square meters (or about 32,000 square feet), the property's decoration has an almost-mystical quality dominated by stone angels and black-and-white motifs, which reflect the duality of good and evil.

Alain Bachmann, general manager of The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah in Ubud, listed corporate luncheons with Balinese entertainment such as dance and Gamalan (traditional ensemble music), and incentive events with team-building activities centred on art and Balinese traditions, as events which have been previously held at the estate.

Guests of The Chedi Club Tanah Gajah in Ubud can avail themselves of Bumi Duadari - a 15 minutes' drive away from the club - for events of up to 45 pax. For functions at Bumi Duadari, an additional venue rental fee at $1,800++ USD per event is required. Catering is available in 3-course and 4-course menus, or served family style, at rates of US$45++ to $65++ per person.

"Art Expressions" - an art therapy activity where guests can sketch directly from nature under the guidance of local artists, costs US$144 (IDR 1,900,000; excludes 11% tax and 10% service charge) per person with afternoon tea. A 24-hour advance reservation is required.

The 20-villa Chedi Club Tanah Gajah in Ubud itself also offers a wealth of experiences such as cooking classes, paddy trekking and Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table) meals, and catering for up to 100 guests at a time.
