Unless you've been living under a rock, by now you've heard of Pokémon Go. The augmented reality game is taking not only gaming, but also marketing, by storm.

"You have millions of people walking around … going wherever the GPS-enabled mobile app tells them to go. This means savvy businesses are going to be buying ads to bring hundreds of these 'zombies' to their stores," reports HubSpot contributor Ryan Scott. "According to TechCrunch, a pizza place in Queens, NY, saw a 75 percent increase in sales by paying $10 to lure a Pokémon character to their location."

Although businesses across the country are scrambling to take advantage of Pokémon Go, the smartest among them are looking beyond it by asking themselves: How can I prepare for the next big thing?

Step one is identifying what that thing is, according to Scott, who says savvy business owners can spot new marketing channels early by paying attention to industry trends.

"The first step starts with keeping your eyes open and alert for new opportunities. If you aren't the type of person who tracks the latest trends, identify someone who is and keep up with them on social media," continues Scott, who recommends using an app like Feedly to aggregate marketing news. "Fill your Feedly with feeds rich in new technology and marketing trends like Search Engine Land, Marketing Land, Moz, and TechCrunch."
