A major exhibition and convention venue in Hong Kong, AsiaWorld-Expo’s (AWE) partnership with the upcoming integrated SkyCity project within the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) area is strengthening its MICE offerings.

Comprising office, hotel, retail, dining and entertainment facilities, SkyCity, which is expected to open by Q3 2024, will transform the Hong Kong International Airport into a destination.

“Airport Authority Hong Kong is pushing forward various developments at HKIA to realise the vision to transform it from a city airport into an Airport City by adding multiple functions to the airport,” said Vivian Cheung, COO of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). “HKIA will become a new landmark and destination in Hong Kong and the region.”

Wholly owned by the AAHK, AWE is the anchor for SkyCity and the nearby 11 SKIES destination. Currently in Phase 2 of its development, AWE is using part of the HK$600 million (US$77 million) earmarked for expansion for comprehensive technology and hardware upgrades, expanded event facilities, and to build the city’s largest indoor performance venue. AWE’s total event space will eventually be over 100,000 sqm.

11 SKIES will have Hong Kong’s largest retail (800 shops), dining (120 concepts) and entertainment complex, a kids’ zone, experiential leisure options, three Grade A office towers and four hotels (Regala Skycity launched was in 2021), opening by phases through 2027.

With two ports of entry, 11 SKIES is next to the HKIA Terminal 2 and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The former is minutes away via a footbridge, while the latter is accessible via the autonomous Airport Citylink. Zhuhai and Macau are within a 40-minute radius.

11 SKIES has immediate connectivity to the MTR, and sits atop an integrated transport terminus with a dedicated zone for buses, mini-buses, taxis and coaches.

“Though there may be similar city development concepts around the world, AWE will maximise the synergies with Hong Kong International Airport to provide exclusive services tailored to MICE visitors' needs,” said Enid Low, chief strategy officer, AsiaWorld-Expo Management. “AWE collaborates with the airport to offer an in-venue, off-airport check-in service for business travellers during exhibitions. This allows visitors to maximise their time at the event by checking in their luggage directly at AWE.”

Super Terminal Expo, set for 2024, the first of its kind in Asia, will showcase trends and technologies in the cargo and passenger terminal sector.

The organiser, Informa Markets Asia, has also linked up with CAPA – Centre for Aviation (CAPA), a leading source of aviation market intelligence. This partnership joins the analytical capabilities and aviation intelligence of CAPA with the expertise of Super Terminal Expo, with the aim of fuelling innovation and growth in the transportation and logistics industry. The CAPA Airline Leader Summit Asia & Sustainability Awards 2024 will be held in AWE alongside the Expo.

Hong Kong’s position in North Asia serves as the connecting bridge between China and the rest of APAC, and hosting such events in AWE will nurture the growth of the transportation and logistics sectors.
