Thistle Johor Bahru in Malaysia is expected to reopen as JW Marriott Johor Bahru by December 2026.

Sitting on a 1.9-hectare site, the hotel will offer an estimated 410 rooms and some 2,517 sqm of event spaces, including a 900 sqm grand ballroom, a 600 sqm junior ballroom and 16 meeting rooms of various sizes.

The hotel’s design plans also include an Executive Lounge and a range of recreation facilities such as a tennis court, three pickleball courts, an outdoor pool, a fitness centre and a spa with five treatment rooms and hydrothermal features.

Additional planned features include a Kids’ Club and several dining outlets, comprising an all-day dining restaurant, a bakery and coffee kiosk, a Chinese restaurant, a smokehouse and a lobby lounge. The hotel will also incorporate a JW Garden, designed as an on-site green space.

Located at the junction of Jalan Sungai Chat and Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, the hotel will be within minutes of the upcoming Bukit Chagar RTS Station, the CIQ checkpoint and Senai International Airport. Major attractions such as Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Mid Valley Southkey and LEGOLAND Malaysia are accessible within a 10- to 20-minute drive.

The Johor Bahru property will be the second JW Marriott in Malaysia, joining the existing hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The deal comes after the acquisition of Thistle Johor Bahru by YTL Hotels earlier this year.

Speaking on the agreement between YTL Hotels and Marriott International, Rajeev Menon, president - Asia-Pacific excluding China, Marriott International, pointed to Johor Bahru’s “strong connectivity and rising profile as a cross-border hub” as a “natural fit” for JW Marriott’s brand.
