Yokohama has been selected to host the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA).
Organised by the IEEE Robotics & Automation Society, the successful bid was a combined effort of Yokohama Convention & Visitors Bureau (YCVB), PACIFICO Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, City of Yokohama, Japan Tourism Agency, and Japan National Tourism Organization, who stated Japan’s high standard of research and Yokohama’s safety and convenience were among the deciding factors.
This also marks the event's return to Japan for the first time since 2009.
The event will be in a hybrid format, just like this year's meeting held in Xi’an, China, which featured simultaneous on-site and cloud meetings.
Japan's second largest city is expected to welcome 25,000 participants: 20,000 logging in online, and the other 5,000 attending in-person — of which 4,000 will come from overseas.
Local business events leaders estimate the event's economic spillover to be about JPY 1 billion (US$ 9.2 million).
Hiroko Kano of YCVB said: “Yokohama is a relaxing port city. Less congested than other cities, we are able to secure social distancing for delegates.”
Makoto Batori of event venue PACIFICO Yokohama, said: “We are confident we can provide a safe environment and the right technical support.”
