Western Australia (WA) has launched its WA Visitor Economy Strategy 2033 (WAVES 2033), unveiling a visionary 10-year plan to establish the state as a premier global destination that captivates visitors with its distinctive cultures, communities, and environment.
The strategy sets a bold target to increase annual visitor spending in the state to A$25 billion (US$16.3 billion) by 2033. While Western Australia boasts a robust intra-state visitor market, the focus is now on attracting high-yield travellers from outside the state, particularly international markets.
Recognising that Western Australia is a destination that demands thoughtful planning and offers immersive experiences, WAVES 2033 aims to appeal to travellers who prioritise quality over quantity. Such travellers are more likely to stay longer, explore further, and invest in premium experiences, making them the primary target audience.
Central to WAVES 2033 is the emphasis on authentic, unique experiences that allow visitors to engage with the state's natural beauty and adventurous spirit. This approach prioritises value over volume, safeguarding Western Australia's natural assets while catering to diverse market segments.

Events play a crucial role in showcasing Western Australia as an 'always-on' destination. The state aims to host a diverse calendar of metropolitan and regional events each year, highlighting its natural wonders, culinary delights, and indigenous cultures. Efforts will be made to disperse events throughout Western Australia, ensuring that all regions benefit from tourism opportunities.
Western Australia is also supporting a series of unique homegrown events as part of Tourism WA’s Vision for Dream Events, aiming for Perth and Western Australia to emerge as the premier events destination in the Southeast Asian region. This vision hinges on securing major blockbuster events with exclusive content and actively bidding for national and international championships, including World Cup tournaments.
Aboriginal tourism
Furthermore, Western Australia is committed to becoming a leading destination for Aboriginal tourism in Australia and foster greater appreciation for its rich cultural heritage. Initiatives include promoting authentic Aboriginal cultural experiences, supporting Aboriginal participation in the tourism sector, developing Aboriginal tourism experiences, and establishing cultural centers to showcase Indigenous cultures.
