The SIA Group has joined other airlines in the region to offer a voluntary carbon offset programme, shortly after committing to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
Singapore Airlines and Scoot customers are now able to offset carbon emissions via the respective airline microsites before or after a flight, with the option to be extended to corporate customers from 4Q 2021.
Passengers will also be able to use their KrisFlyer miles and HighFlyer points on the programme starting from 4Q.
For the first six months from launch (25 June, 2021), SIA and Scoot will match the passengers' offsets.
Some of the projects under SIA Group's programme include protecting forests in Indonesia, supporting renewable solar energy projects in India, and providing clean burning cookstoves for rural families in Nepal.
SIA Group's offsets are calculated and activated by the BlueHalo® digital solution, developed by Australia-based Tasman Environmental Markets.
Singapore Airlines and Scoot add to a growing list of airlines in the region offering carbon offsets, including Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific.
In the business travel sector, TMCs are also joining the fight against climate change. FCM recently launched a global carbon offset programme, while CWT committed to building programmes to reduce its environmental footprint.
