After the unexpected passing of former CEO Arne Sorenson, Marriott International has formally appointed Anthony Capuano as new CEO and Stephanie Linnartz as president.
Both long-time veterans with the hotel giant, the duo had earlier been tasked to share responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day operations of Marriott's business units and corporate functions, in addition to maintaining their current responsibilities.
Capuano was formerly group president, global development, design and operations services, while Linnartz previously served as group president, consumer operations, technology and emerging businesses.
The new appointment is “a bittersweet moment”, said Capuano in a statement. “Arne was a mentor, a champion and a friend to each member of his close-knit leadership team. It is because of Arne’s efforts that we are prepared to move forward with this transition."
JW Marriott, Jr, executive chairman and chairman of the board, has highlighted Capuano's "critical role in Marriott’s growth over the last decade,” and deemed the new CEO "a terrific leader as we continue to advance our growth strategy while also navigating the market dynamics of the Covid-19 pandemic".
Capuano will be the fourth CEO in the company's history, and the second after Sorenson to be from outside the Marriott family.
He began his Marriott career in 1995, managing various continental markets including the Western U.S. and Canada, North America, Caribbean and Latin America, and becoming executive vice president and global chief development officer in 2009. In his latest role leading global development before becoming CEO, the company grew its footprint from 3,200 properties in early 2009 to more than 7,600 properties by year-end 2020.
Linnartz, in her new role as president, will focus on the company's global consumer strategy, including brand, marketing, sales, revenue management, customer engagement, digital, information technology, emerging businesses and loyalty strategies. Also in her portfolio is the global development of Marriott's 30 lodging brands, the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty platform and environmental sustainability.
She joined Marriott in 1997, and served as global chief commercial officer from 2013 to 2019; global officer, sales and revenue management from 2009 to 2013; senior vice president, global sales from 2008 to 2009; senior vice president, sales and marketing planning and support from 2005 to 2008.
