The upcoming Meetings Show on 30 September will offer a new certification for event and meeting planners who are looking to drive their organisation’s sustainability strategy.
The online six-week Complete Sustainable Events Course is curated and delivered by Anna Abdelnoor of isla — the independent industry body driving the events sector transition to a sustainable future — together with other sustainability experts.
Planners will touch on key areas from purpose-driven events, supply chains and stakeholders, carbon footprint and food to waste management to storytelling.
Also joining the table is event producer Andy King — headliner for the 2020 Meetings Show — who'll share introductions and case study examples, including the failed 2017 Fyre Festival in the Bahamas, and his consultancy's path on championing zero waste and sustainable events for high-profile clients such as Leonardo DiCaprio.
Said Andy King, "The world is falling apart around us. We all need to be driving positive change through each event that we host. It’s the right thing to do!”
Ross Barker, Group Commercial Director of The Meetings Show, said: “As the industry remains focused on recovery, sustainability will be one of the biggest challenges facing the business meetings and events sector. So, after Andy and Anna both hosted extremely popular and pertinent sessions at last year’s show addressing various sustainability issues, we were keen to bring both parties together on behalf of the industry to address the growing need for a dedicated and credible certification in this area.”
King added that the course will fit around busy schedules and groom sustainable events experts — be it planners who have already started their sustainability journey or those who are new to the cause.
Abdelnoor noted as well that both project coordinators and senior leadership are recognising that "we each need to become sustainability ‘experts’ within our own remit, for the future of our industry and for our planet".
Visitors to the live The Meetings Show — which also takes place virtually on 30 September and 1 October — can find out more about the course at isla’s stand or sign up for the 8 November course here.
