Sarawak will be establishing its own airline by the end of this year,
in a move expected to significantly boost tourism and connectivity to
the region.
Speaking at the recent Night At The Museum event held at the Borneo
Cultures Museum, Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun
Openg added that the Sarawakian airline will come on the back of a
takeover of regional airline MASwings, and will be aimed at addressing
high ticket prices during festive seasons, and improving regional
connectivity to make Sarawak more accessible to regional and
international visitors.
In addition to the new airline, Abang Johari also revealed plans for
the new Kuching International Airport, which will be able to accommodate
15 million passengers annually. Drawing inspiration from Doha
International Airport, the airport in Sarawak will feature a “modern,
fully automated design” that ensures an efficient and seamless
experience for travellers.
“[Kuching International Airport] will take at least three to five
years to complete,” said Abang Johari, “but once operational, it will
play a crucial role in attracting tourists and business travellers to
Sarawak.”
