As part of Sarawak's plans to expand business events capabilities for more of its cities, Sibu has been earmarked to kick things off, where a recent event announced the launch of the Business Events Consortium of Sibu (BECoS), and the 'I Want to Discover Sarawak" contest as part of the international Redefining Global Tribe (RGT) campaign.
The state-funded Sarawak Convention Bureau created Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) as a special campaign dedicated to empower industry players in the business events sector. Projects have been rolling out steadily ever since, including this second installation of the BESarawak - Tribal Gathering which happened on 2 July 2019 in Sibu, aimed at promoting the city's potential as a business events host.
The Sarawak Government is not only spreading word of Sibu's strength in the shipping, timber, palm oil and engineering industries, but also taking steps to develop the city's tourism, agriculture and education sectors. The newly launched BECoS will act as a platform to advocate Sibu's abilities to host conferences and highlight its potential as the next business‐tourism hub within the region.
But it's not just the business events sector that Sarawak is targeting, because BESarawak is also looking to diversify the return of investment with a two pronged approach; collaborating with Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) to hold the 'I Want to Discover Sarawak" contest.
"It is a very promising destination for business events and tourism to merge, being a relatively new place for business events," said the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth & Sports Sarawak.
"We must realise this to raise awareness on Sibu and its capabilities to not just become the next Business Events destination, but also the next place for tourism."
