Abu Dhabi is no longer a mystery to meeting and incentive travel planners in Asia. As the UAE’s largest emirate – home to genuine people who value innovation, diversity and originality – it is simply one of the most exciting and progressive cities in the world.

Experience the world in one place

Abu Dhabi is just over seven hours from most Asian airports and a world away from the hustle and bustle of many Asian cities.

Its pristine beaches, exceptional hotels and resorts and wonderful cultural offerings – not to mention endless shopping options – has seen a significant growth over the past five years in attracting meetings and incentive reward groups from around the world.

In late March, Abu Dhabi played host to the 37th World Veterinary Association Congress – the first time this prestigious meeting has been hosted in the Middle East. Held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and organised by the Emirates Veterinary Association, it brought together industry leaders from the global veterinary community to discuss the latest innovations in the field.

This is one of a string of international meetings being held in Abu Dhabi in 2022. Also in March was the 6th World Congress of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies, while in May the emirate will host the Worldchefs Congress & Expo, and in October, will welcome attendees of the 12th World Congress of Esthetic Dentistry.

Despite its glamourous façade, Abu Dhabi is an extremely affordable option for organisations and associations, as evidenced by its popularity with event organisers. As a destination, it is particularly suited to those seeking a combination of excitement and quality within a cosmopolitan and culturally diverse setting.

Meeting and event spaces are exceptional, service levels are extremely high quality, and there are ample opportunities to mix business with pleasure.

Greater peace of mind with safety and security

Abu Dhabi’s high level of safety and security is most definitely a plus for MICE groups. In 2021 it was named the world’s safest city for the fifth consecutive year in Numbeo’s Quality of Life index.

The emirate successfully navigated its way through the pandemic through an unwavering commitment to the health and safety of its residents and visitors. The nationwide vaccination programme in the UAE saw 92% of the population fully vaccinated, ranking the UAE first globally in vaccinations administered.

Today, it still has protocols in place to ensure safety at events, tourism attractions and cultural sites for all visitors, which now include allowing non-vaccinated people to enter and participate if they have received a negative PCR test within 48 hours. The ‘Go Safe’ certification programme, which recognises hotels, restaurants, malls, cultural attractions, and other places of public interest that follow rigorous hygiene standards, is another layer of security for all visitors.

The national airline, Etihad Airways, has also implemented a high level of hygiene protocols on its aircraft, and now allows fully vaccinated travellers to fly to the emirate without the requirement of a negative PCR test.

Even as COVID-19 numbers are appearing to reduce globally, Abu Dhabi will continue to maintain safety measures for the benefit of all residents and visitors.

This means that MICE groups, and all those visiting the emirate to enjoy its strong annual offering of lifestyle and leisure events – including the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, UFC and the Mubadala World Tennis Championship – can rest assured that they are in one of the world’s safest destinations.

Abu Dhabi is recognised the world over as a leading player in industry sectors including oil and gas, financial services, aerospace and healthcare.

The emirate continues to invest heavily in developing a robust academic and research environment. Institutions like Khalifa University and New York University Abu Dhabi offer vital research and development opportunities that not only contribute to the social and economic progress of the emirate and the country, but also spur innovation among businesses and industries.

Organisations including Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Mayo Clinic, and EDGE Group, and the global MNCs and NGOs such as the United Nations that have set up a presence in Abu Dhabi, are catalysts for driving knowledge and building a culture of innovation across healthcare and life sciences, education, banking and finance, technology, renewable energy, and more.

Abu Dhabi is also increasing efforts to attract crypto-centric businesses, with a desire to become the leading cryptocurrency centre in the Middle East.

The emirate’s growing knowledge-based economy and forward-focused ecosystem across both public and private sectors add value for international associations and event organisers seeking to align themselves with local innovators and global leaders in a variety of industries.

As a meetings and incentive travel reward destination, Abu Dhabi is fit-for-purpose, with a variety of venues that suit those on a budget as well as high-end programmes where delegates demand the best.

At its heart is the multiple award-winning Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), which offers an impressive 142,226 sqm of event space. The ICC Abu Dhabi, part of the complex, has the capacity to seat up to 6,000 delegates, offers four large conference halls, 21 meeting rooms and a purpose-built banquet facility. It also has a number of outdoor event spaces.

ADNEC also has six onsite hotels, with standards ranging from three to five stars. In total there are 1,800 hotel rooms.

Beyond ADNEC, visitors are spoilt for choice with meeting and accommodation options. The W Abu Dhabi - Yas Island, Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi At Al Maryah Island, and Emirates Palace are just some of the emirate’s five-star properties.

Groups on a budget are also well catered for with options such as Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi, Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre, and the Kingsgate Hotel Abu Dhabi.

In between meetings, Abu Dhabi offers a wealth of things to see and do “beyond the ballroom” –shopping for traditional Emirati crafts or designer brands, lazing on the beach, hitting the water on a leisurely cruise, or enjoying the emirate’s countless unique cultural experiences. Exploring the galleries and special exhibitions of iconic museum Louvre Abu Dhabi is one of the more popular ways to spend a morning or afternoon.

Another wonderful experience is to visit the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. This is an exceptional group experience which gives visitors fascinating insight into the traditions and importance of the sport of falconry, which has been practiced in the region for more than 2,000 years.
