MICE facilities in Penang have been going through major changes, with the Malaysian state keen to boost its business travel and tourism sector.
New convention centre rises
Penang Island is set to welcome a new key landmark, with the Penang
Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC) scheduled for completion in Q2 of
2025. Able to accommodate conferences, exhibitions and large-scale
events, the PWCC is expected to elevate Penang’s status as a preferred
destination for business tourism alongside its existing appeal as a
cultural and leisure hotspot.
The PWCC will be part of the larger Light City mixed-use development,
which also includes The Waterfront Shoppes retail mall, a hotel and an
office tower, further enhancing the area’s attractiveness.
Complementing this waterfront transformation is the redevelopment of a
nearly 200-year-old warehouse located between Fort Cornwallis and the
Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT).
This project will include a shopping complex, hotel and outdoor
dining facilities, and is aligned with the Ministry of Transport’s plans
to turn the SPCT into a home port for the cruise industry, boosting
tourist arrivals to Penang.
Future plans also involve implementing a Fly & Cruise initiative,
making the SPCT a key hub while upgrading the Penang International
Airport (PIA) to accommodate the expected increase in visitors.
Growing room inventory
Over the next few years, Penang will develop 10 new hotels with a
total of 4,000 rooms – including the first JdV by Hyatt in the country
with 156 rooms and the 303-key Galaxy Minyoun Penang – the Southeast
Asian debut of the Chinese hotel brand.
Before these developments, the Gurney Bay Hotel, a Parkroyal hotel,
has opened its doors on 1 September this year. Poised to become a key
landmark of the Gurney Bay lifestyle precinct, the 368-key hotel will
offer resort living and serviced apartments and a range of facilities
such as a restaurant, ballroom, and various meeting rooms.
The island will also welcome the first five-star Peranakan-inspired
hotel of its kind in Sungai Nibong when the 298-room Marjorie Hotel
debuts in 2025.
Direct flights, seamless travel
Increased direct connectivity will be providing seamless travel for
visitors to the island. Starting 28 October 2024, AirAsia Malaysia will
be operating a Penang-Shenzhen route, followed by HK Express’
Penang-Hong Kong flights on 21 November this year.
These routes, along with existing connections such as Flydubai’s
Penang-Dubai and Juneyao Airlines’ Penang-Shanghai routes, will enhance
accessibility to the island, attracting more international visitors and
contributing to the state’s economic growth.
