Sydney welcomes more than 1,300 delegates at its first international convention at the 20th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE 2022). Held at International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), it attracted over half of attendees in person as borders opened after two years.

ICMS Australasia Managing Director Emma Bowyer said that the largest delegations were from South Korea and the US, with over 70 countries in attendance.

Conference Chair and former Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Engineering at the University of Newcastle, Emeritus Professor John Carter, said the conference was originally planned for Sydney in late 2021 but was delayed to ensure greater opportunity for in-person attendance.

“A major conference legacy that ICSMGE 2022 can be proud of is that over 25 percent of our attendees are young professionals and geotechnical engineers. The learning and networking opportunities we are providing are likely to be as profound in many years to come as they are now,” added Carter.

ICSMGE 2022 is hosted by the Australian Geomechanics Society and managed by ICMS Australasia, with support from BESydney and Business Events Australia.

In pre-pandemic times for the year 2019 up to March 2020, ICC Sydney delivered 487 core events that generated US$359 million in direct expenditure, of which 73% came from international and interstate visitors. The venue hosted 1 international events and 96 national conventions in 2019/20, down on 33 and 112 respectively in 2018/19. These attracted 70,593 international delegates and 195,273 visitors from interstate.

The exhibition industry also continued to play a fundamental role in the venue's success, with 41 exhibition events delivered.
