Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), which drives Brisbane's economy by attracting investment, tourism and events, says it has delivered its biggest year ever, with its investment attraction and business growth programmes surpassing A$1 billion (US$650,150).

Brisbane’s calendar of events, conferences and strategic global marketing have injected hundreds of millions into the visitor economy and there were record high numbers for visitors (9.4m), visitor nights (53.7m) and visitor spending ($11.3bn).

Key events included the once-in-18-years Australian Tourism Exchange, which saw thousands of global travel media, buyers and industry leaders hosted in the city and the National Rugby League Magic Round. BEDA-backed initiatives and events supported more than 11,700 local jobs and created more than 600 new positions for the city’s fast-growing workforce.

BEDA chairman Paul Spiro said: “The phenomenal results are a testament to the expertise and dedication of everyone across the BEDA network. Brisbane is being recognised globally for its talent, innovation and sustained economic growth – with BEDA leading the charge for the benefit of every resident, entrepreneur and investor.”

BEDA added that through close collaboration with key government and industry partners including Brisbane Airport Corporation, Tourism & Events Queensland and the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, BEDA continues to deliver transformative outcomes that cement Brisbane’s reputation as a global powerhouse for business, tourism, events and innovation.
