Malaysia celebrated the best in the business events industry, honouring a total of 27 winners at the 3rd rAWr Awards 2017 last week.

Held at Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur, the awards recognised winners in excellence, leadership, professional standards, innovation and best practices in the MICE industry with award categories for venues & events, conventions, incentive travel, exhibitions and special awards. This year, more than 50 entries were submitted by industry players.

The biennial rAWr Awards-acronym for Recognising Award Winning Results-is a collaboration between Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, and the Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS).

The awards gala was graced by the Deputy Secretary General (Tourism), Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, Nor Yahati binti Awang on behalf of the Deputy Minister, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia, YB Datuk Wira Mas Ermieyati binti Samsudin. Chief executive officer of MyCEB, Datuk Zulkefli Hj Sharif and president of MACEOS, Dato' Vincent Lim were also in attendance.

"MyCEB has stimulated the growth of the business events industry in Malaysia by supporting a total of 341 business events. This consisted of 64 conferences, 247 corporate incentive groups and 30 exhibitions that collectively attracted 127,849 delegates in 2016, and has contributed to an estimated economic impact of RM1.58 billion (US$377 million), representing an increase of 22% over 2015's RM1.3 billion." said Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif during his speech.

"These events include World Tunnel Congress 2020, 17th World Congress for Endoscopic Surgery of the Skull Base and Brain 2020 and the Congress of the International Board on Books for Young People 2022. All three of these world-class business events are expected to draw an additional 3,200 delegates with an estimated economic impact of RM39.76 million to Malaysia, further highlighting the country's capabilities as a thriving knowledge and creative nation," he added.
